Proposal

 General Idea

The project(s) I am working on throughout the semester will involve photography both in digital and analog format. I plan on incorporating photography with beading somehow, and experiment with both mediums by combining the two within my practice and trying something new.

My idea for this project is too weave beading into photography through the creation of regalia for my subjects to wear for the photoshoot, while also beading the photographs themselves creating a new form of visual representation to the imagery itself. I want to work with B&W film photography, so that the beads can provide a colorful and textural element to the piece adding to the see/touch senses to it. As for the digital component, I want to enhance my skills in digital media such as photoshop to develop my skills further in digital photography.

The subject matter I intend to achieve would be traditional portraitures, landscape and regalia photoshoots. I would also want to photograph anything that I find meaningful while capturing moments as well as the documentation and my work process throughout my photographic journey this semester.

Schedule/Timeline

January 31st - February 6th

- First traditional photoshoot on Sunday with brother and sister

February 7th - 13th

- Experiment with beading

- See how the beading process interacts with the photos themselves

- Conduct research on ideas/inspiration on what to bead and how to bead properly

- This is where my ideas on how the beading will interact with photography itself and how I will proceed further into my project on where this will take me.

February 14th - 20th (Reading Week)

- Organize, plan and facilitate photoshoots throughout the week

- Develop, print, edit photos

- Proceed with beading project(s) throughout the week

February 21st - 27th

- After various photoshoots and experimentation with beading, reflect on these ideas and decide which direction this project will go

- Make a concrete decision on how to continue this practice into a finished project and let the process happen organically as I go along, allowing for changes to take place at this time.

- Once a final decision is made, come up with a plan mapping out the rest of the weeks ahead in preparation for the finished project at the end of the semester

- Proceed with the final planning

Current Studio/Work Space

Here is my current, temporary work space as it is right now, however once my equipment and supplies come in over the weekend, I will be moving my work into my studio space where I will be able to work on my art projects. This is more or less the space in which I operate at home working online.

Assignment One

I painted this piece intuitively and creatively with an idea I had envisioned in my head about how I wanted this painting to look. The visual representations are symbolic to Blackfoot culture with elements of pictographic imagery, some symbols are recognizable, for others, are not. I am a bit familiar with some of the imagery involved such as the buffalo prints representing the Blackfoot, my handprint representing myself and my identity, the sun symbol which I often depict in a few of my artworks and the six dots which represent the Six Grandfathers. The colors are heavily inspired by Indigenous representation, specifically through a Blackfoot perspective. The painting is untitled, left to be interpreted through the viewer's eye, while keeping a simple Blackfoot aesthetic that feels familiar to those who want to understand it.

 Acrylic on canvas, 10" x 10" cm.
